Arthritis Pain Treatment - Relief Arthritis Pain with Medication and Alternative Treatment

Arthritis Pain Treatment - Your previous experiences with pain, and your attitude about your condition can affect how you react to pain and how much pain you feel. Most of us believe pain is just a part of getting older and that they just have to “grin and bear it.” But pain is not necessarily something you have to live with - it’s okay to admit that you have pain and to take action to relieve it. Pain doesn’t have to be a part of daily life. By taking action to reduce pain, you may find that even routine tasks that have become difficult - like bending down or opening a jar - become easier.

Pain is actually your body’s alarm system telling there is something wrong. When part of your body is injured or damaged, nerves in that area release chemical signals. Pain “tells” you that you need to do something. For example, if you touch a hot frying pan, the nerve ending on your hand send pain signal so you pull away your hand to prevent further injury. It is actually a body mechanism to protect you from further serious injury.

Arthritis PainArthritis Pain Treatment should be seriously taken into consideration since it can disrupt your life. The pain might hinder you to perform even a simple task such as walking, bending down, stepping down the staircase, getting up from bed or simply as opening a jar.

Arthritis pain HURTS YOU emotionally, psychologically, and physically. It creates low energy levels and can be frustrating. If you feel depressed and stressed, your pain got worse and you might end up in a cycle of pain that makes even harder to handle.

Arthritis pain strikes not only to older people but also younger people in few cases. Arthritis sufferer might experience different kind of pain from time to time. There are no easy answers or magic potion to relieve arthritis pain. What works for some people might not work for other.  Finding an effective and safe medication for arthritis pain is a complex task that may take years thru trial and error.

Arthritis Pain Treatment available in the market today, mostly in the form of topical painkillers or drugs (such as acetaminophen and anti-inflammatory:  ibuprofen and naproxen). Topical painkillers come in the form of gels, creams, lotions or patches that are applied directly to the skin over your affected aching joints. These products might temporarily relief your pain but there might be side effect such as burning or stinging sensation, strong medicinal odor and some contain salicylates which is not safe for those allergic to aspirin or taking blood thinners.

  • Counterirritants that make skin feel hot or cold, they contain ingredients that irritate your skin. Ingredients such as menthol, oil of wintergreen or eucalyptus oil produce a sensation of hot or cold that distracts you from your arthritis pain, giving you temporary arthritis pain relief. Examples include Biofreeze, Flexall and Icy Hot.
  • Arthritis PainAspirin-like pain rubs, called topical analgesics, contain salicylates, the same ingredients that give aspirin its pain-relieving quality. In addition to offering arthritis pain relief, these products may reduce joint inflammation as they’re absorbed into the skin. Examples include Bengay, Aspercreme, Mobisyl and Sportscreme. If you are allergic to aspirin or are taking blood thinners, check with your doctor before using topical medications that contain salicylates.
  • Creams made from chili pepper seeds. The seeds contain a compound called capsaicin (kap-say-IH-sin), which causes the burning sensation you associate with peppers. Creams made with capsaicin are most effective for arthritis pain in joints close to the skin surface, such as your fingers, knees and elbows. Capsaicin creams work by depleting your nerve cells of a chemical called substance P, which is important for sending pain messages. Capsaicin creams may need to be applied regularly for one or two weeks before arthritis pain relief may occur. Examples include Capzasin and Zostrix.
  • Prescription pain gels and patches containing the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) diclofenac (Voltaren Gel) may provide some pain relief for people with osteoarthritis in their hands, wrists, elbows, feet, ankles or knees. Diclofenac gel is massaged into the skin around your affected joint four times a day. Side effects may include rash and redness where you apply the gel. NSAIDs, such as diclofenac gel, carry a risk of stomach bleeding and heart problems, including heart attack.

Over-the-counter topical pain medications may offer temporary relief from arthritis pain. These topical preparations aren’t intended to take the place of your prescription arthritis medication and there’s no evidence to suggest they can be helpful when used long term. However, you might find temporary relief from arthritis pain flares by using topical pain medications. Relying on these topical preparations more often may indicate that your arthritis is worsening or that medication prescribed by your doctor isn’t working. Tell your doctor if your arthritis pain isn’t being controlled.

Arthritis PainAside from these topical pain medications or drugs, another very effective treatment is using alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, healthy diet, hydrotherapy, aqua aerobics, massage, Yoga, Tai Chi and gentle exercise program which include stretching and muscle strengthening. Exercise is crucial for arthritis sufferer as it increases strength and flexibility, reduces joint pain, and helps combat fatigue. Always listen to your body, avoid positions or movements that can cause pain and don’t exert more energy than you think your joints can handle.

You can continue to search, and you can continue to use the same solutions that have not been working with little or no effect for you all this time.
